The current state of conventional methodologies is reviewed and the current status and
future potential of non-culture methods are discussed, highlighting both their technical and
clinical implications. The diagnosis of infections caused by Candida spp., Cryptococcus
neoformans, Trichosporon spp., agents of endemic mycoses, Aspergillus spp., agents of
zygomycosis, Fusarium spp. and Pseudallescheria boydii is considered.
